Breakdown of Jon Huntsman's positions

Breakdown of Jon Huntsman's positions, from Vic in the comments at Ace's

Give them a click over there!

Well I have given Club For Growth a few more days to complete another paper and they haven’t so I will try to struggle along without them. The next in the order on the CFG page would be Sarah Palin but since she is not an "announced” candidate I am going to skip her for now and go with the next one who has "announced”. And that would be

Jon Huntsman

Cap and Trade/AGW

But, it is a half-ass non-back-away. He still believes in AGW but he says with the economy the way it is now is not the time to implement it.

In short on this score he is epic fail on one of the go-no-go issues.

Gun Control
His stance on gun control is largely unknown. The On The Issues site says "no statements or votes” as governor. The only thing I could find was gaffe he made while being interviewed by Hugh Hewitt in which he said he would support an Assault Weapons ban. I call it a gaffe because the next day he sent HH an E-mail walking that back and said he misunderstood the question. In the e-mail he said he would veto such a bill.

I am going to give him an unknown/neutral on this one.

Small government in general (spending and regulation)

Two years later, he accomplished those reforms. They included a new flat state income tax of about 5 percent, a reduction of the sales tax on unprocessed food from 4.75 percent to 1.75 percent, and nearly $30 million in tax credits for industries such as renewable energy development and mining.

I have to throw the BS flag on the "renewable energy tax credits. That is not a tax cut. That is crony BS. His so-called flat tax of 5% is not that big a deal either. What they had before was a progressive tax that ended at 7%. That is about what nearly every State has and it mostly flat. (But it is a cut)

On spending his record is not so good. The Utah budget started at $17.3B when he took office and ended in 2009 after he left at $22.8B. He also left them with a huge deficit. So on spending you could say he grew the size of government greatly. He also supported the Democrat Porkulous package according to Breitbart’s big government site.

His record on regulations is dismal. Mostly with crap and tax and other green BS initiatives. The only thing he is on the right side of there is ethanol subsidies. But even that may be suspect.

Overall his record does not indicate a move to limit the size of government. His support for "green regulations” and crap and tax completely overshadows his positives in the tax environment. And spending didn’t help him.

He gets a negative here.

Socialized Healthcare
Huntsman touts the Utah healthcare reform law which he signed into effect and supported. Supposedly this promotes market based solutions to healthcare in Utah. I have not been able to find out much about it and whether or not it is worth a damn. Perhaps someone from Utah can shed some light on that? How about it Y-Not do you know anything about this?

He did support the individual mandate in 2007, but then again so did a lot of other Republican who saw it as a solution for the "free rider” problems in the ER.

After much searching I can not find any position he has taken on Obamacare.

For now I will give him a neutral on this, mostly because of lack of information.

Border control/Amnesty

That is the literal kiss of death.

In summary on immigration; he gets an epic fail

Abortion
In that CBS article he said he was a right to life governor.

In his remarks, Huntsman spotlighted his record on abortion, saying he "signed every pro-life bill that came to my desk" as governor.

Those comments were made at a Christian Conservative conference. That is the ONLY thing I can find about his position on abortion. I will give him a positive on this one.

Summary

He winds up with 3 negatives, 2 neutrals, and 1 positive. That puts him as the most liberal candidate so far beating out Romney. Also, although they don’t seem to have much info on him, the "On The Issues” site places him firmly in the middle of "moderate”. That is the kiss of death as well.
