Breakdown of Cain's positions

Another post from Vic in the comments of Ace of Spades. Good breakdown of Herman Cains positions on issues (from 6/11/2001). See below the fold. If you aren't reading Ace, you aren't keeping up with events!

Today's eval - Herman Cain

Note that Cain’s record is ALL rhetoric so one must look at his "trustworthy-ness” to determine if he will keep his word. He has been married (with no weiner pics) for 43 years so he should be trustworthy I would think.

From Worldnet different views on AGW

Businessman Herman Cain is among those who does not think man-made global warming is real, and told the Hill: "We have a path to energy independence in this country and it just baffles me as to why the leadership of either party in Congress or the White House doesn't pursue it ... . We simply need to remove the regulatory barriers and stop overreacting to the concerns of the environmentalists."

Gun Control
Much has been made of his statement regarding the 2nd Amendment. He supports the 2nd Amendment but believes in the authority of State and local government to regulate guns. That is to say that he does not believe in "incorporation” for the 2nd amendment. While you can say that he does believe in the Constitution, he has a divergent view of incorporation from most conservatives. My view on this issue before and after the recent Supreme Court ruling is that we either have complete incorporation or no incorporation. Liberals have long taken the opinion of "select” incorporation for issue they love. Cain loses some points on this one. I don’t consider it a deal breaker but it is a major down tick.

Small government in general (spending and regulation)

Club For Growth mostly says his record is "thin”. True, as I said he really has no record so you must go with rhetoric. His rhetoric on taxes, spending, and regulation is almost pure "conservative”. He strongly advocates low taxes, low spending, and low regulation.

CFG gives him one ding; he supported TARP. I am ambivalent on that one. In its original conception under Bush it was thought to be absolutely necessary to prevent the huge collapse that we got anyway. I was against it as was a lot of the Morons here. Most Republicans were in favor of it. Too bad that the Obamanite regime changed what it was originally designed for a and wasted it.

One other thing that CFG gives him a plus for but I consider a negative is his support for the ‘Fair Tax”. It is good that he wants to revamp the tax code to something more fair, but the Fair Tax is NOT fair.

Overall I give him an up on this category, but because of the Fair Tax and TARP, it is not a big up.

Socialized Healthcare
High marks here. From CFG white paper:

He clearly favors the repeal of ObamaCare, and wants health insurance premiums to be deductable "regardless of whether they are purchased by the employer or the employee.” In 2003, he opposed the addition of the Medicare prescription drug benefit calling it "another massive entitlement.” He said he "could go along with means-testing” Medicare and block grant other entitlements to the states.

Cain supports Congressman Paul Ryan’s 2011 budget proposal as well. "I absolutely support Paul Ryan’s plan…it is exactly the kind of bold restructuring that we need in order to get our hands around the entitlements issue. We need to restructure programs, not just reshuffle, which is what we did for decades, and now look where we are.”

Border control/Amnesty
Herman Cain’s position on illegals is to seal the border and enforce current laws. Something neither Republican or Democrat Presidents have ever done.

The liberal press has made much ado about his statements that we should build "the Great Wall of China” across the border and add an "alligator moat”. The MFM is either incredibly stupid or just trying to build a case for ridicule (joke about it and it will go away strategy). They do not understand his method of humor and exaggeration to get a point across same with his 3 page bill thing). He is a radio talk show host and this is pretty standard fare for getting points done.

I give him a plus here.

Abortion
Solid right to life

Summary

5 good 1 bad; but all based on rhetoric only. Morons will have to make their own decision on how trustworthy they consider him. I think he is based on a 43 year marriage and no weiner pics. (new standard)

This is the best conservative record so far on the 6 issues.

1 I disagree with Vic on the Fair Tax point, and as to TARP, I believe Cain did explain why he was in favor of it.

But overall a fair assessment. I give it 4 out of 5 *
